Rough Sketches for Front Cover & Name Planning

Here is an example of some of the sketches I did to start bringing ideas together for my front cover. I decided that I wanted it to be modern and arty and that I needed to include the album name and the artist name.

I had the idea that I could use a picture from my music video, of my actor Lucy walking along the beach with the sun reflecting in the background which would link the album and my video together. I thought I could have written the text in the sand. I decided that this idea would be too plain and I not modern enough.

I started to list what I need to put on my front cover- the Album name and the Artist name were the most important, I now this from my questionnaire results. 14% of people said that the band should be shown on the album cover. They also said that artwork is important so I wanted to combine images and artwork together to get an arty feel to the images. I also found out from my questionnaire that they didn't think that the artist should be onstage and that 25% decided a posed shot would be best. So I decided to draw ideas that followed what my target audience wanted.

I decided that because Kirsten was the main band member, she should be included on the front cover. I thought that she should be clothed in modern clothing so that people would know it is a young and current band. I thought that I could use frames as if she was in a photograph. Then I had the idea that there could be a frame within a frame which would add depth and a 3D feel to make it look more interesting. Also, I thought I could use the sides of the frame to put the text on.

I had an idea that I could have both members of the band on the front cover. I liked the frame idea and putting it on a diagonal would make the image more edgy, which would link to the indie genre. I thought that Kirsten could be in front as she is the lead. However, their would be a white blank background which I thought might look a bit boring, so I wasn't sure about this idea.

Here is my sketch notes of names for my band, the album name and the song titles. I chose a range of words and wrote them as a list, I then put them together to see which I thought fitted well. I also wrote the band name in a way that I wanted it to look on the real design. My planning has really helped me with deciding on titles and album designs because they have helped me to remember my ideas and think about what it positive and negative about them.
