Rejected Ideas for Ancillary Task

Above is one of my rejected ideas of the positioning of the album text. I thought the two parts of the text were positioned too close together and I thought that the 'Bella & The Notes' font size was too small because it needs to be big enough to attract fans attention on a CD shelf in a music store for example. There was also a black box around the band name, I thought this was edgy and I purposely made the edge of the black box choppy. However, I felt that it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the album cover and so I decided to change the fonts and the size, and then the location until I was happy with the overall outcome of the positioning.

For this photograph I held the slanted frame in one hand and the camera in the other hand, I asked Kirsten to hold the other frame straight. I didn't like this image because she isn't central of the straight frame which made her seem not important. After looking at this photograph, I decided that I wanted the frame in the foreground to be the straight one because it would fit nicely on the front of the CD as the CD shape is square. This is when I changed them around to get the correct shapes that I felt would suit the cover.

In the picture above, I used a red filter frame and a white spotlight. The spotlight created directional lighting, creating shadowing on the left side of her face. I chose the red filter because I thought it made the image more interesting, also in my music video I used red spotlights so I thought this would link in nicely with my video. I decided that this photograph wasn't suitable for my album front cover because it seemed too plain, and you cannot see Kirsten's face very clearly. As she is the lead of my band I think it is important to be able to recognise her so I therefore decided against using this image.

In this photograph I held a red filter over the white spotlight to create a red glow, like the red spotlight that I used in my music video to create a link between the texts. I decided that this picture was too plain and simple, and didn't capture the modern, edgy feel that I wanted to create. That was the main reason that I chose not to use this photograph for my front cover.

The two designs above show the photograph that I took off the sun setting behind the branches. I edited it to look more interesting using colour balances, saturation, contrasting and 'cutout' filter. I then edited the frame from the front cover around the photograph to link the back cover and the front cover together. I decided to change it to blue (underneath image) because that would also match the colours on the front cover and would therefore further link them together. I also put the song titles on the this back cover idea to see if I liked it but I decided that the image wasn't right as it was too plain. I chose a different image from the same shoot which I decided was more interesting and would attract more attention.

This was an idea I had for the CD itself, I cut out a piece of the front cover, again trying to link the pieces of the digi-pack together. I didn't feel that this looked effective because on it's own it didn't make sense. Due to the CD being a circle, I thought that the straight lines of the frames didn't compliment the shape of the CD so I decided to use the back cover imagery instead, which would still link the sides together.

This is one of my practices at the front cover design. At this point, I knew that I wanted to but two separate pictures together in this way. I hadn't got the inside photograph correct in this image (above) the shoulders were not in line with that of the outer image. This is because of the angle that I took the photograph itself. If I had rotated this image it would not have fitted into the inner frame correctly. After this experiment, I tried a different photograph which I managed to line up with the shoulders as it was the correct angle. I also decided that the red filter on the inner image was too over powering and contrasting to the blue of the outer picture of the hands holding the frame. This is the reason that I chose a white lighted image on my final front cover.
